PVCu Double Glazing in Ewell, Surrey

A beautiful 1930s family home in Ewell, Surrey has recently been given a carefully considered upgrade, around 35 years after we first installed windows there back in 1991. It’s always a real privilege to return to a property after so many years. Homes evolve, families grow, and technology moves on, but the trust built all those years ago remains. That in itself makes projects like this especially rewarding.

Bringing PVCu double glazing to this home in Ewell, Surrey after 35 years of aluminium windows in hardwood frames.

Back in the early 90s, the original installation would have been a huge improvement at the time. But fast forward three decades, and window technology has come a long way. The homeowners were now looking to improve comfort, reduce energy bills, cut down on outside noise, and benefit from the latest security features, all without losing the character that made them fall in love with the house in the first place.

Modern PVCu windows are designed with energy efficiency at their core. Inside the frames are multiple small air pockets, known as chambers. These chambers work in a similar way to how a thick wool jumper keeps you warm. The jumper traps warm air close to your body, slowing down heat loss, and these windows do exactly the same for your home. They help keep warmth inside during winter and prevent excessive heat from entering during summer, creating a more comfortable living environment all year round.

Sound insulation has also improved significantly. If you live in a busy area or near a main road, you’ll really notice the difference. Modern glazing and tighter seals help reduce unwanted external noise, making your home feel quieter and more peaceful.

Security is another major step forward. Today’s multi-point locking systems secure the window at several points along the frame, rather than just one central lock. This makes them far more resistant to forced entry and gives homeowners added peace of mind.

However, performance wasn’t the only priority here. Just as important was preserving the original look and feel of this 1930s property. Homes from this era often have a strong sense of symmetry and proportion, and it was essential that the new windows respected that.

The finished result is a beautifully balanced design that stays true to the home’s character. The elegant square leaded glass adds a classic, period-style detail that feels completely in keeping with the age of the property. From the outside, the windows look exactly as they should, timeless and in harmony with the surrounding architecture.

One of the key design features used to achieve this is something called “equal sightlines.” In simple terms, this means that all parts of the window, whether they open or not, look the same from the outside. Traditionally, opening windows often have thicker frames than fixed panes, which can create an uneven or slightly clumsy appearance.

To solve this, we use what’s known as a “dummy sash” in the fixed sections. This is a clever design detail that mimics the appearance of an opening window, even though it doesn’t actually open. The result is a consistent, symmetrical look across the entire window.

This approach brings several benefits. Visually, it creates a clean and balanced appearance, which is especially important for period homes where symmetry is key. It also ensures that the amount of visible glass is evenly distributed, allowing natural light to flow consistently throughout the space. Most importantly, it avoids that mismatched look you sometimes see where one part of the window appears heavier or thicker than another.

In homes with decorative glazing, such as leaded lights or Georgian-style bars, equal sightlines make an even bigger difference. They help maintain the integrity of the design, ensuring everything lines up perfectly and looks as though it has always been there.

This project is a perfect example of how modern improvements can be introduced without compromising character. The homeowners now benefit from a warmer, quieter, and more secure home, while the property itself retains all the charm and balance of its original 1930s design.

It’s not just an upgrade, it’s a continuation of the home’s story, ready to be enjoyed for many more decades to come.
